Lighting of the Park

Event Summary
Each year for over the past fifteen years, Richmond’s Memorial Park on the corner of Perth Rd. and McBean St. has been lit up with Christmas lights to launch the festive season.  Usually on the first Saturday of December residents of Richmond all gather together in the evening to enjoy caroling, friendship, entertainment and refreshments.  Also during this time a presentation occurs on stage culminating with the lights being switched on.

Event Details
Planning for the yearly event begins in fall and dedicated, cold, volunteers can be found in November busy putting up lights on each tree in the park.  Residents of all ages enjoy the camaraderie and the spirit of the season with carol singing over hot chocolate and cookies donated by the Richmond Bakery and Kiwanis Club. And no Christmas event is complete without a visit from Santa who arrives aboard a fire truck. The jolly man himself usually arrives towards the end of the ceremonies, thanks to our local volunteer firefighters and is able to take the time to say hello to all his young fans.

This gathering is also an opportunity for residents to provide donations to the local Food Bank to support the Christmas Food Baskets.

Looking Ahead
Ideas are already in the works for this year’s “Lighting of the Park” and with your generous support the RVA hopes to make each year better than the last.
